Django Unchained

The first thing you notice when you see the trailer for Quentin Tarantiono’s ‘Django Unchained’ is the stellar star cast. Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx plays Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, played by Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz. Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive. There are many other big names in the film including the charming Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the villain Calvin Candie. It looks like he is having a blast playing the role.

The other striking aspect of this trailer is something you would expect out of a Tarantino film – Seductive violence. That shot of blood splattering over those white flowers is mesmerizing. I expect a lot of Western-style action (even though the film is based in the South) against the backdrop of American history. There are some things that stay with you after watching the trailer. The slaves walking in a line, the menacing DiCaprio and some of the one-liners. The trailer leaves out the more uncomfortable situations of the film namely the whole depiction of the horror of slavery. But I am sure QT will address that in a twisted way in the film.

Going by the trailer, I am sure the selection of the songs in this film will blow people’s gaskets. QT rarely gets his music wrong, anyway. Coming back to Leonardo DiCaprio, I think this is going to be his masterstroke. He looks super convincing as the ‘N-bomb’ dropping plantation owner smiling through his stained teeth. This might just be the role that finally lands him the elusive Oscar.

Equal amounts of humour and action will turn this film into a Tarantino trademark. At least I hope it will.

What did I not like about the trailer? Well, it’s the darn fact that the trailer is out 6 months before the film’s release! It’s going to be too long a wait. Watch ‘Django Unchained’ when it releases this Christmas.

Remember - - The ‘D’ is silent.

What’s also interesting is what Red Bull USA is doing to promote the movie. Click here and check it out for yourself. The Watch And Vote contest goes live July 1st! Make sure you take part. I know I will!
