The Flying Bach team psyche themselves up ahead of their premiere performance at Vienna's Burgtheater. Afterwards, Red Bull Flying Bach's artistic director Christoph Hagel said of the performance, 'the piece has never looked as good before as it did on this famous stage. The audience went along with it brilliantly. Vienna is a definite highlight for us.'

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Das Wohltemperierte Klavier was the musical score for an explosion of physical moves and style. The Flying Steps – four-time breakdance world champions from Berlin – leapt and span into one impossible position after another while Christoph Hagel played the piano and modern dancer Sylvania Pen led the d-minor routine.

Together, dancers, opera performers and musicians told Bach's dramatic story of love, honour, grief and anger – the narrative explained through sound and dance.

Spotted in the crowd were the founder of Vienna's Life Ball Gery Keszler, dance school owner Thomas Schäfer-Ellmayer, actress Sabrina Reiter, Prince Hubertus von Hohenlohe, fashion designer Lena Hoschek and beach volleyball star Clemens Doppler.

Keszler had this to say about the performance: 'All in all a superbly thought out concept that I could imagine myself planning for the Life Ball too.'

Hubertus von Hohenlohe added, 'They’ve gone out and want to float and fly. Unbelievable.'

Fashion designer Lena Hoschek was also gobsmacked by the performance – 'Incredibly good. I’ve always found the breakdancers at Stephansplatz in Vienna cool and this mix at the Burgtheater was an unforgettable experience.'

The juxtaposition of red velvet seats and stalls adorned with gold with the sleek black stage design suited this old-meets-new dance performance perfectly. Onstage, breakdancers shared the limelight with elegantly dressed musicians and opera performers. And off it, ladies and gentlemen in evening attire and opera outfits mingled with b-boy and b-girls.

All six shows sold out well in advance, but don't worry. After these triumphant performances, two further shows were added. Red Bull Flying Bach returns to the Burgtheater on January 6-7, 2012.
