15 divers will travel down under but only four will succeed – the qualification for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2012 in February is one competition not to be missed.
The initial line-up for the qualification competition at the Hawkesbury River has been confirmed and includes divers from nine different countries who were given a plane ticket to Australia and the chance to compete in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2012. Eight high dives over two days, on February 2 and 4, will decide the athletes to complete the field of permanent World Series divers.
By means of a video application 10 athletes were selected in addition to the five divers who competed as part of the 2011 World Series but did not make the automatic cut for season IV. It means that established cliff divers, such as Kent De Mond (USA) and Hassan Mouti (FRA), will go up against the likes of Jonathan Paredes – the wildcard diver who achieved a 4th place in Italy – former British Olympian Blake Aldridge and a host of other top diving talent from 27 metres as they compete for the four available places in the 2012 World Series.
Two days of competition, eight high dives and five judges – qualifiers will have to show their full potential to the international judging panel in order to get the nod to appear in seven world-class competitions during the 2012 high diving season. The scores of two required dives, with a fixed degree of difficulty of 3.6, and two optional dives from both competition days will be added together with the cumulative scores constituting the final results.
The president of NSW diving, Eric Brooker, and former Australian diver Thomas Rickards will support World Series head judge Claudio de Miro, Renato Rosi and Jeff Arbon in awarding the athletes’ performances with scores from 0 to 10.
