After much speculation last year's Chinese Grand Prix finally got the go-ahead late on, after the FIA approved track improvements.
The slot on the calendar had been marked with a 'subject to the homologation of the circuit' note against the race weekend. The circuit needed the granting of a new licence after they carried out significant work on turns one, eight and fourteen following subsidence. This work included drainage and surface improvements. The Shanghai International Circuit organisers had recently extended a deal to host the race for the next seven years, and the final approval has led to the track gaining a licence that will run for the following three years.
The Shanghai International Circuit is located about 30km outside Shanghai, the most notorious of Chinese cities, once known as the Paris of the East, but now referring to itself as the Pearl of the Orient. The circuit is the most spectacular, ultra-modern F1 track, designed as the race circuit of the new millennium, with its stunning architecture. This season's race is now the third on the calendar following the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix, it will take place on April 17.
