Last season the Red Bulls made a name for themselves across Europe with Salzburg becoming the only team on the continent to win every single one of their six UEFA Europa League group matches. Unfortunately they then crashed out in the last 32 as they lost 3-2 to Standard Liege in the first leg, squandering a comfortable two goal advantage in the process. A single goal would've been enough to see them through in the return leg, but Liege held on for a scoreless draw to progress. This season's group is set to be even more of a challenge, with a line-up that wouldn't look out of place in the Champions League – with Manchester City, Juventus and Lech Poznan the opponents.
When Man City visited Austria earlier in the campaign they were worthy 2-0 winners, the Red Bulls have had a poor start to both their league and Europa League campaign. By contrast the English giants are on a great run of form in the Premier League, still well in contention for their first league title since 1967/8. City will not want to drop points at home and the City of Manchester Stadium will be a daunting cauldron of noise that Salzburg will have to overcome if they are to get anything from this game.
