Named after famous automobile designer and manufacturer, Ettore Bugatti, the Le Mans Bugatti Grand Prix race circuit was most famed for being the host of the '24 Hours of Le Mans' race since 1923. The semi-permanent MotoGP course was built around the existing 24-Hour track in 1965 and course uses local roads that remain open to the public for most of the year, part of the larger track, as well as a separate, purpose built section of its own. It is situated just south of the city of Le Mans, around 200km from Paris and has hosted Grand Prix racing since the late sixties. In 1995 however, a serious accident involving Spanish rider Alberto Puig saw its license revoked until it underwent some stringent safety improvements. It returned once again in 2000.
Le Mans is a tight track dominated by first gear corners that place the emphasis on late braking and hard acceleration, rear end traction is also a key area. With the capacity to comfortably accommodate up to 100,000 spectators, it's no wonder the Bugatti circuit plays host to some of the greatest racing in the world including; the 24 hour truck race, the FIA GP2 Championship, French Touring Car and GT races.
